The Market for Something to Believe in is Infinite

Sometimes, friends send me messages about their jobs/employment and this one really hit home for me. It clearly articulates why I am loving my new job and think it was a true blessing in disguise to have been let go from my last job. It was rough to be in limbo and not have a job for those few months but it really has turned out for the best.
It's hard to stay motivated, no matter how much you like the work you are doing, if you really hate the people you're doing it for and secretly wish for everything to implode.

I'd say in my case it was less loving the work but loving my coworkers and the professional relationships we had developed.

Inspiration: Miracle

I needed some inspiration so I watched the movie Miracle. Nothing like making yourself feel better with Diet Coke, a couple chocolate truffles and watching America beat communists.

This movie isn't about just the USA v. USSR game in 1980 Olympics. The real story is about not letting the myth or idea of something get in the way of working hard and believing in yourself/your team. It is about preparation and seizing your moment etc etc.

This message is certainly hitting home as I search for a new job. I have been in this position before and it is very easy to become discouraged. This go round I haven't been looking that long but each day that I don't get a measurable result my confidence really takes a hit. I need to keep reminding myself that I am a good candidate and the right fit will come. This job search is particularly complicated/depressing because I am literally 20-something days away from not having a place to live (not true - I'll move in with parents, but still). I am trying not to get bogged down with this looming threat of putting my life on hold and packing up all that I've put together over the last 6 years into storage, but damn is it ever hard.

Do you believe in miracles? YES! (via)

I just have to keep focusing on what I can control and be prepared through hard work for all the possibilities. The boxes have to be packed no matter what because the lease ends, I always knew that.  And life will go on regardless, even if I will be 24/25 living with my parents. Whatever will be, will be.

Free Time and Chain Letters

I was let go from my job yesterday and at some point I will write a post about how it is probably for the best to be out of such a political organization and how I feel, at a high level, that environment is detrimental to engineering innovation. Though I may just link to youtube videos instead... the world may never know.

Anyways, I have some free time now. Much of which was spent job hunting this morning and a good deal of which later this week will be packing my life into boxes and trying to figure out if I really do have to move back in with my parents. When Work Feels Overwhelming, Remember That You Are Going To Die

So a little clue into how I've been spending my day at work:

I've had the banana phone song stuck in my head for approximately 2 months and yesterday I found this on our site:

banana cell phone holder

So I was inspired to make a "This Shit Is Bananas" list of banana products. You can find it here.

When I run out of ideas I have been listening to the following YouTube Videos for inspiration:

my life is slowly becoming a big joke.

What is Next?

Some things about my new job:

I sit in a lawn chair and work at a really fancy computer. This makes me lol.
The hours are strange - 1-8pm: mostly because those are more active hours for people to be online and searching for things to do in the space and still within semi-normal hours for work.
These hours sort of throw me off... I am more productive in the evenings but at the same time I want to be off work when the rest of everyone is. This is why I am considering not keeping on with this kind of work in the future.
I am also more motivated to go to the gym after work, but the lyon center hours during the summer preclude that. I guess I will just get fat. But at the same time I end up not eating much more than a snack before I leave (and no breakfast [who eats breakfast anymore?]) and then a soda and snack at work and then a dessert-esque snack after I get home. This is so unhealthy - maybe it will make me thin... lol.
Real work will start happening next week. I have an orientation session on Monday about the more specific things that I am going to be doing on a day to day basis to get traffic to the site. Hopefully I can achieve the goals they want.

I don't know if I want to do this with my life in the future. When I am here I think it is okay, when I leave I don't really want to... everything is hard.

I want to do nothing and just go on road trips and blog about them.

I'm Intrigued By Your Cubicle Knick-Knacks

When work feels overwhelming, remember that you're going to die.

I am constantly bored at my job at the school of Gerontology. I really enjoy the people and appreciate that they value my opinion on things, even if it is petty stuff like what kind of white-out to buy.

I guess my real issue boils down to the fact that I'd like to spend the downtime I have at work doing homework but things never quite work out in a way for me to do it so I just check my email a lot. I want to be busier with actual work for the school (excluding calling inquirers because that sucks) or doing things that will benefit me directly.

I love pretending I have the courage to quit my job.

I have been looking at several job listings on the interweb to see about maybe getting a full time position that would pay me more and actually give me some real work experience but I keep thinking that right now, things are too easy to jump into something different. I have a unique opportunity to be taken care of financially and spend most of my time focusing on schoolwork. Though I am concerned that there will be nothing for me once I graduate with the master's because I have little work experience; this just might be the low stress focused approach that will lead to a good internship over the summer and a position in the fall and beyond.

Everything is uncertain. I am glad I have time. I know a lot of my friends are stressing because they are having to figure out what they are doing in like 3.5 months.

ch-ch-ch-changes.

Updating for Updatings Sake

I am about to head off to work at the School of Gerontology. I am not excited. It feels like a waste of time most of the hours that I am there.

I've been doing a ton of reading for my classes. I think that will be the theme of graduate school... reading. I am glad that, so far, it has all been interesting stuff. I recently read Next-Generation Media: The Global Shift put out by the Aspen Institute. It is a concise and easy to read intro to a lot of things that are going on in new media.

I don't have anything else to say... I was just bored.
